Solid Ash | Solid Walnut

Walnut cube with whitewashed ash liner

For this tiny, snowy landscape, I used a cube of varnished walnut and added a tapered whitewashed liner made of ash, a naturally whiteish-yellow wood.  The sweeping grain pattern adds a subliminal icy-cold breeze to the viewing experience blowing from left to right.  The image is almost monochromatic, and whitewashing the ash gives that subtle warmth, the fulcrum of the knife-edge balance on display between brown and blue, two compliments always at war.  It’s one or the other, and when they mix they make the dark gray seen in the shadows, neither brown or blue.  The framing pulls our attention to the rustic house and the dormant trees.
