My client had a clear idea of how he wanted to frame his beautiful print of “Centennial” by Kadir Nelson. Could the frame be made to evoke the bat in the painting, he asked? I milled up some solid ash, cut a rounded profile on my router table, cut the miters on my chopper, then joined it with dovetail keys and corner splines. Matching the bat’s color in the painting took mixing 2 of my 25 stain colors, but I got it. The finish is oiled and varnished, then gently worn with pumice and paraffin oil on a felt block before a final waxing to give it a sense of age and use. Then we added 2 solid cotton mats and a sheet of nearly invisible UV filtering glass. Thanks to my client for pushing me to create something unique!
