Antique Book Plate | Hand Painted | Milk Painted

Milk painted frame with worn through edges

How satisfying to give an old piece a new, more protective home.  The antique Asian bookplate was in a frame that had fallen apart and under a mat that had cause acid burns to it.  The thin chamfered profile was stained in a cherry color, then milk painted in a vintage teal color.  Before I painted it though, I swiped a block of beeswax along the profile’s corners, allowing a hemp oil scrub with fine steel wool on top to gently wear through the corners where it would likely have the most wear and tear.  This reveals thin, irregular stripes of the red/orange stain below.  With clear wax on top, the frame feels like an appropriate housing for this beautiful piece.
